I was talking to some friends recently about our childhoods and old journals and the stupid things we wrote in them. Based on their reactions to some of my bizarre journal entries, I realized that despite having an older sibling, I spent a lot of my childhood in my own little world. This solitude, self-imposed or not, has persisted in my adult life, which might explain some of the subject matter in a lot of my drawings. Or maybe I’m just trying to justify another self portrait.

I painted this as a last minute birthday card (actually, all my birthday cards are usually last minute. Shhh…), but I couldn’t think of anything clever to say on the inside. In the end, I gave my friend a different card, but I still like this painting. Can you think of a good caption for it?

I was really inspired by the Alexander McQueen collection for Fall/Winter 2011. This look in particular is so amazing texturally, that I wanted to see if I could capture the lush fur and swishy feathers in pen. After a little digital touching up, I’m pretty happy with the result.

Unhappy Hipster Wants Your Ramen

Last night a few friends and I went to check out a new pop-up ramen shop in the Mission (Ken-Ken Ramen, if you’re interested). As with any hot, new, trendy thing in this neighborhood city, there was a line when we got there, and before long, all bystanders were informed that the ramen was all sold out. Bummer! Oh well, next time, right? But for Hungry Hipster, it was “Get Angry and Be Entitled” time. Protectively clutching his digital SLR, he tells the head chef/owner guy, “You know, you REALLY should put up a sign or something, to like, let us know what’s going on, so I don’t wait in line for 40 minutes.” Then storms off. Aww.

For some reason, seeing an act of anger and rudeness up close in real life is kind of scary and thrilling. Like shooting a gun or witnessing a fight. One time I was at a music festival, and a fight broke out right in front of me. The punching lasted about 2 seconds before security was on it, but in my head I was thinking “Wow! A fight! A real, live fight!” You just don’t see something so primal, so close in everyday life. I mean, I see angry drunks and hobos all the time, but usually from a safe distance. Anyway, something about this guy’s rudeness stuck with me, and I drew it out at work this afternoon. (I know, I wrote “RAMEN” wrong. Doh!)
